I realized that this month is December and I had a decent number of show watched this year (plus those who were dropped mid way and disregarded because they are more of a chore.) and to top it off… I am playing Kantai Collection (for 10 months already) so I guess this will have a heavy impact on the number of shows I actually watch.
Anyways, to all those who are doing this top-tens. Best of wishes and I hope I can make way to write some of my favorite shows that impressed me this year.
Well, Choosing a best show over the too many choices this year is something I really dread about. And obviously my top anime this year is definitely Mushishi.
Mushishi has a wide variety of episodes that will leave you at awe. And It was the best sequel this year (Sorry folks, It’s not Love Live!).
Here are my other top choices based on what they are:
Best old show I watched this year: Mushishi (Mononoke is the Runner up)
Best Slice-of-life this year – I don’t understand what my husband is saying (Barakamon is the runner up)
Best Idol them show – Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita. (Love Live! Season 2 is the runner up)
Best odd show this season – Ore, Twintail ni narimasu (Kanojo ga flag o Oraretara is the runner up)
Best Short this year – I don’t understand what my husband is saying (Puchimas!! petit petit Idolm@ster is the Runner up)
Best Finisher this year – Space Dandy (Magimoji Rurumo & Futsuu no Joshikousei ga [Locodol] Yatte Mita are the runner up)
Craziest Plot twist of the year – ‘The world is the matrix’ or when Hatate Souta discovers that the world he lives in is not the real world – Kanojo ga flag o Oraretara and ‘the outside world is the matrix’ or when Tougo discovers that the their place is the world is protected by a universe-sized force field and the Vertex is the one who almost destroyed the universe – Yuuki Yuuna de Yuusha de Aru. (Dandy retains his memory during his warps when warps are not real – Space Dandy is a runner up.)
Best group of the year – The Night Raid in Akame ga Kill (Try Fighters in Gundam Build Figthers Try)
Best ‘bad show’ – The Irregular at the Magic High (SAO is the runner up)
Sorry folks, there’s no such thing as a best show this year because it was always been a subject of scrutiny and debates. But instead of giving you the series of best shows you can actually watch here’s a list shows this year that I can say that they are good.
This list was in no particular order
Tokyo Ghoul – I’m gonna wait till I had that uncensored version of theirs… Watching it with censors destroys my enjoyment. Too gore.
Knights of Sidonia – I guess this show deserves a lot of love… and a lot of awesome battles of creature you wish you’ll never met.
Space Dandy – Surprise, This show is totally great totally a candidate of the best show this year.
Mushishi Zoku Shou – the most underrated best show this year (unless Garo is also that good)
Haikyuu! – Despite my indifference toward sports anime, this show actually rocks.
Gundam Build fighters Try – Season 2 of GBF, another reason to watch Gundam without having to learn the universe that surrounds it.
Kiseijuu – Because having an alien half makes you badass…
Tonari no Seki-kun – Having a weird seatmate can never get this funny, I swear.
Silver Spoon season 2 – a show that will make you cry over someone’s pig.
Barakamon – no expalnations, just watch
Futsuu Joushikousei ga Locodol Yattemita – Because I think It deserves a better treatment than a certain Popular anime with idols that aired that before this one.
Hanayamata – too much drama for Middle school kids. over all it’s cutesy and very cheesy show.
Gugure Kokkuri-san – Because I’m a fan of weird shows, I give it a try and it was worth it.
Shingeki no Bahamut: Genesis – Do I have to explain how cool this show is?
Yuuki Yuuna wa yuusha de aru – It’s Matrix meets Madoka.
Selector (Infected and Spread) Wixoss [it’s pronunced as wee-cross] – Madoka-laced Card Battles.
Shirobako – an anime making anime… not really.
Jojo’s Bizzare Adventures – so manly.
Mikakunin de Shinkoukei – A cheesy love story… Too mcuh love for Mashiro.
Denkigai no Honya-san – Hmm, It has a touch of Working!! it’s also good.
Danna ga Nani wo Itteiru ka Wakaranai ken – so much love for the couple… It’s torally entertaining.
Fate Stay Night Unlimited Blade Works – Awesome adaptation of the 2nd route of Fate Stay Night. toatlly rocks when action starts to kick in.
The shows mention are definitely a must watch… But I think a measure of a show’s greatness really depends on the individual’s taste. So being the best is really subjective.
This might be a filler post. But I do have something to say.
There are shows that are just awesome that you can’t wait if there is a season 2 of it or not. At times, You wish this show could have do it right just like the others.
Well, At least I’m saying it right off the bat. Here’s other older shows that made an impact on me this year.
For Better or for worse, One-Off was one of my favorite sleepers that I had watched this year. Probably due to my Very stressful outlook in life and very tedious work cycle I follow.
I’m a bit bias against slice-of-life show so I would probably never recommend anyone watching this show. Unless you are truly tired. But if you do want to watch a better Slice of life shows, Go watch Aria or Tamayura or even Minami-ke. It’s on your own discretion whether or not you’ll like them or not.
Rather than watching too much drama. I’d prefer something like this show. It has teenage angst, Identity crisis (not the gay problems), Psychological suffering, and even a cast of misfits (correct term would be club-less people) who are taken as an experimental sample by an unknown entity who loves to observe people.
This is rather a great find… and I really, really wish that they made a season 2 of it.
Saki Achiga-hen: Episodes of side A specials.
This one is a spin-off of a long running mahjong manga in Japan. It is a story of the players who are in the Division A of the National Mahjong Tournament. As expected of Saki-verse, it’s filled with flashbacks, friendships, philosophical battles, crazy powers adjusted to mahjong, comic reliefs, girls bonding that slightly inclined to the other side, and fan-service.
It always reminds me that there no such things as impossibles… only a big hurdle to jump above it.
I think this show was actually better attached to me than the original series but, the characters are nowhere near the Glamorous playing of the original series.
Friendly reminder: probably you should have at least a good knowledge on Japanese Mahjong to truly understand this show better and if you need something a bit manly, go watch Akagi. I heard it’s a great mahjong anime.
Aquarion Evol is rather pretty eccentric. It’s a mix of romance, drama and action is the weirdest ways possible and we get to see the ever so Enigmatic Fudo Zen.
It’s a sequel of a the great show named Genesis of Aquarion. Many people had already compared this show to the older one and they much say that the older one was better (especially the ending)… I too loved the ending of Genesis of Aquarion. But this show is rather different… It was never afraid to go to extremes and it was ridiculously good it never felt that this show must be unrestricted. It’s fresh, it’s innovative and lastly you got to characters you’ll love despite being goofy.
Genesis of Aquarion
This show was truly spectacular at times and truly bad at other times. It didn’t actually liven up to the expectation that this show is somehow wackier than it’s successor. but the main cast is lovable, the interaction they made was great. Though it may seem that they always had to fight a hard fight because they’re at a brink of extinction… Nonetheless, It’s a great show to watch. I won’t tell you the best plot twist this show has though. It’s truly horrifying.
My verdict that I actually preferred Aquarion Evol than this one. But this show is also good in many ways, especially with that dramatic ending.
The other shows I did not mention but was already discussed was:
Gundam Build Fighters
There you had it. these are the few memorable shows that made my 2014 better.
Some shows might have been ignored by the common masses like us. But, there was once a show that it made it’s way through it all. And then there was Mushishi.
Some shows might have been ignored by the common masses like us (meh! who watches shows that has no themes of love, friendship, action, hardship and cool protagonists?). But, there was once a show that it made it’s way through it all. And then there was Mushishi.
Mushishi is a piece of diamond scattered in a pile of gems. It was watch by few of us and was only judged by few of us. It was certainly a great experience watching shows like this one of these days.
It’s a taste of tradition with a mixture of supernatural and Humanity in the balance. It is a journey of a man named Ginko who travels to help other people who knows and not knows what mushis are. But, not all stories tells about Ginko and his exploits. There are also stories where Ginko was only used as a way to help the other characters to be better. and there are episodes where Ginko just coincidentally meets with people who are troubled by the mushis.
Mushishi has no cute girls, has no fight scenes, has no stories of how great friendship can overcome destiny, has no heroes to salute to, has no idols to love, no great evil that will hamper the great good. Only stories of ordinary people who have been affected by the mushis and how Ginko tries to make them coexist with those creatures unkown to many.
It has stories of great struggle, stories of familial love, has stories which worth better than those cheesy love stories you might have watched, has stories of dark nature, and stories of how Ginko became a mushishi.
A word of advice. Watch Mushishi, you might find it good and might think it’s a masterpiece.
Gundam build fighters is a culmination of all Gundam Franchises ever released. And It’s story was based on Friendship, being a good character, being a good influence and of course people who enjoy playing with toys.
But the joy of fighting doesn’t end there… It also features stories of individuals who also love the art of Gunpla battle. Though most of them have also different intentions or different goals. One thing was clear, They love what they do.
Despite being a children’s show, Gundam Build Fighters is actually top class. And you could say that it even tops the quality of our long running shonen series (no bias intended).
Lastly, Gundam Build Fighters is a must watch… It really is a great show.
